Scholarships

The Morro Bay Youth Sailing Foundation provides opportunities for local youth to learn the art and skill of sailing.

Learn to Sail Scholarships for Summer

Learn to sail this summer with Learn to Sail lessons at the Morro Bay Yacht Club. Sessions for youth, ages 8-18, run Monday-Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and cost $450. Completion of lessons qualify the new sailor to apply to join the Morro Bay Junior Yacht Club.

The Morro Bay Youth Sailing Foundation is offering Learn to Sail Scholarships to cover the tuition of a session for ten youth ages 8-18 who live in San Luis Obispo County. Residency of the child in the county is a requirement of our 501(c)3 charity. Also, please decide if your child is mature enough to comply with instructions, as safety while sailing is paramount.

Applications will be reviewed promptly and notifications will occur by email. You must respond via email to accept the offer.

Scholarships must be used in 2024. If your desired session is full, consider an alternate week or reapply next year

To apply for a 2024 Learn to Sail Scholarship for youth:

Sailing Instructor Scholarships

Scholarships are available to help you become a U.S. Sailing Certified Small Boat Instructor with the intent to teach youth sailing in San Luis Obispo County, California.

Sailing Instructor Scholarships are offered by the Morro Bay Youth Sailing Foundation (MBYSF).  Being awarded a scholarship is not an offer of employment.  Contact the coordinator of the ‘Learn to Sail’ program at the Morro Bay Yacht Club, Bob Schwenoha or the Junior Advisor of the Morro Bay Junior Yacht Club, Chris Matson, to investigate employment opportunities.  These are separate organizations from the MBYSF.

Scholarship Details

A scholarship will reimburse the cost of the Online ($130) and In-Person ($325) courses taught by U.S. Sailing.  There may be other costs involved to become certified.

Before applying for a scholarship, review the U.S. Sailing prerequisites to ensure that you qualify and are ready to take the courses.  You can ask Chris Matson, Junior Advisor, for the name of someone who can help you with motor boat skills. Read more at U.S. Sailing prerequisites.

Note:  If the In-Person section is not completed by their 12-month deadline, U.S. Sailing requires that the Online section be re-taken.  This scholarship will only reimburse for one Online course.
